Question about 12 gage ammo!
Went to Academy today in Houston, the one on 290 and Bingle area and got the one and only Remington 870! Said they got it in last night and they were selling fast! Busy in there too. Anyway, should I get 2 3/4 inch or 3 inch shells of 00?? They didnt have ANY 00 shells in stock so I will have to hit WalMart or somewere else and get some. Went to WalMart in Brenham the other day as well and they didnt have ANY 9mm or .45 but Academy today had both. Anyway 2.75 o 3 inch?? Thanks! And the Remington is awesome! All black. Right on! I paid 359 for it so not too bad and its worth it to me!

Re: Question about 12 gage ammo!
3" mags kick too much, even in a semiauto.
Go with 2 3/4" shells. |
Re: Question about 12 gage ammo!
I don't know about Houston but the Walmart near my house (S. Carolina)
only sells Buckshot around Deer hunting season, they have their Turkey loads in stock right now... YMMV. |
Re: Question about 12 gage ammo!
2 and 3/4 inch. less chance of short strokin'
Also a bit easier on the ladies, recoil-wise ( no offense intended to those "tough gals" you know who you are) magazine capacity is reduced with the longer 3 inch magnum rounds. |
Re: Question about 12 gage ammo!
At almost all probable defense engagement ranges, the difference between 9 and 15 of the .38 caliber balls will be moot. Given that, I use 3" anyway. Given the correct build and be sure the shotgun firmly in the shoulder and it's ok.
I've shot a lot of skeet and trap. My starting position is similar to port arms and I'll snap it into my shoulder after I call pull and acquire the pigeon. Once every so many rounds, the snap won't be perfect and I'll end up shooting with the point of the butt on my shoulder. If I do that 3-4 times in a single day----whoa, pain and bad bruising. That would be really bad with a light pump shooting 3" OO bucks. |
Re: Question about 12 gage ammo!
I see no reason to use 3s in pretty much any situation.

Re: Question about 12 gage ammo!
In the case of some extended magazines, should you opt to buy one, you can get one more shell in the magazine if you go with 2 3/4. You could put the 3" shell in the chamber, then.

Re: Question about 12 gage ammo!
I use 2.75inch shells in mine
I haven't used 3 inch shells yet so this is kinda useless to you. |

The 3" Remington Magnums have 15 pellets and velocity of 1225 fps. The Remington 2 3/4" have 9 pellets and velocity of 1325 fps. I've shot the 3" ers and the kick was mild compared to buckhammer slugs. |

Seriously though, I bought all they had at Academy 2 3/4" or 3", and didn't care. Cleaned them out. I'll use them all some day. Or, I'll trade them. Ain't none on the shelf now. Just skeet loads. |

Re: Question about 12 gage ammo!
I bought the LGS out of the 12 gauge rifled slugs and their # 4 and the 00
I only get the 2 3/4 because I want to be able to shoot "MY" ammo in anyones shot gun. if I have 3" and kick some POS in the head and take his shot gun and it is only chanberd for 2 3/4' shells than I am left with a club. yea I do like clubs, but I so love the smell of solvent and oil! |
